Feast One Hundred & Ninety Six

Appetizer - When was the last time you had your hair cut/trimmed?

I'd say it's been about a month. Generally I get a haircut every month-1/2, so I'm due pretty soon.


Soup - Name one thing you miss about being a child.

Saturday morning block cartoons. Looking forward to every Saturday morning, I'd get up in my jammies, fix a bowl of cereal and watch Casper, Funky Phantom, Scooby Doo, Captian Caveman, Sid & Marty Krofft shows, Jason of Star Command, Shazam!, whatever else was running at that time, until American Bandstand came on around 12 or 1. And that was my time.


Salad - Pick one: butter, margarine, olive oil.

I love butter and margarine. I don't particularly care to know how margarine is made now that I saw an special on the Food Network about how they make Country Crock, but it's still good... Olive oil is a relatively new entry onto my palate and I'm still evaluating its qualities.


Main Course - If you could learn another language, which one would you pick, and why?

I took several years of French in high school and college and can understand/speak smatterings of it still. My kids have taken French in elementary school and it's been fun to learn some of it again with them. I'd love to be able to speak it fluently. It's such a gorgeous language and sounds great just to listen to.


Dessert - Finish this sentence: In 5 years I expect to be...

In 5 years I expect to be getting Brainyboy ready for graduation and college selection, plus dealing with the trauma of a teen-aged Tink really hitting puberty. I also expect to be in the same job I am now - hey, I'm going on 11 years in this job already - why stop?

Appetizer - What is the weather like today where you live?

Pretty warm, high in the upper 80's and lows in the 70's. Should be partly cloudy and humid with a chance of scattered storms off and on throughout the day. I don't anticipate any meaningful rain...


Soup - On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being highest, how career-minded are you?

I'd say a 6 - I don't consider my career to be the center of my life but then again I'm not doing what I would consider a "dream" job so that could be different. I would enjoy moving up a ladder but so far that hasn't happened and isn't likely to. I just want to be happy with what I do and proud of my work.


Salad - What type of window coverings do you have in your home? Blinds, curtains, shutters, etc.?

We have curtains and blinds in most of our windows.


Main Course - Name something that instantly cheers you up.

Just being silly with my kids. Making them laugh improves my own mood.


Dessert - How many times do you hit the snooze button on a typical morning?

My wife gets up before me and hits the snooze button twice. When she's finished in the shower she wakes me up and I go in, although sometimes it's tough to get out of bed. The Today Show is my snooze alarm...

Appetizer - Do you consider yourself to be an optimist or a pessimist?

Oh, I'm very much an optimist. I see the good in people all the time, and rarely have a default negative outlook toward the world. Unless something has specifically wronged me, I generally think the best of them. And I expect it. And, surprisingly to a lot of other people, I usually get it. Take that, O thou cynical conventional wisdom!


Soup - What is your favorite color of ink to write with?

Black. Colored pens look odd.


Salad - How often do you get a manicure or pedicure? Do you do them yourself or go to a salon and pay for them?

Never had either one, never plan to have either one.


Main Course - Have you ever won anything online? If so, what was it?

I've won money from an online company that periodically distributed surveys for companies. I think I won a $50 Amazon Gift Certificate. I also won a Fandango movie ticket from the Blingo Search Engine once.


Dessert - In which room in your house do you keep your home computer?

We have a landing at the top of our stairs that the computer desk sits, as well as a large bookcase and a big fake tree. All the comforts of home...

Appetizer - What is the nearest big city to your home?

I guess Nashville is closest "big" city, though it's not really that much bigger than Knoxville. Atlanta is the closest "big" city.


Soup - On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being highest, how well do you keep secrets?

If I told you, I'd have to... Anyway, I think I'm pretty good about it. I'm not asked to keep many secrets, though, so I'm not sure how good I'd really be if it came down to it.


Salad - Describe your hair (color, texture, length).

Brownish, curly in the back. Usually about mid-neck length though I tend to let it grow sometimes in the back when I really shouldn't. That's to compensate for the front - I have a high forehead, so while not actually "balding" when looking at the right angle it might appear to be so. I really hate my hair, to be honest...


Main Course - What kind of driver are you? Courteous? Aggressive? Slow?

I'm very non-aggressive and tend to lean toward following all the rules of the road - save a strict adherence to speed limits. I do feel like I am a very skilled driver, and can maneuver very well in traffic.


Dessert - When was the last time you had a really bad week?

A few months ago things really started falling all directions at work and it got a little bleak. That was not a good time.

Appetizer - When someone smiles at you, do you smile back?

Absolutely. Usually I'm smiling at them first, even. At least presenting a pleasant face. I'll never understand the people that decide to go through life as if at any moment they're going to be taken out back and beaten. People will almost always be nice to you if you're nice to them, or give them the opportunity not to worry you're going to bite their head off.


Soup - Describe the flooring in your home. Do you have carpet, hardwood, vinyl, a mix?

We have beige carpet in the living room and Brainyboy's bedroom that replaced the original bluish carpet when we moved in. Unfortunately, after 2 kids and 4 cats it still looks a bit peakish in spots. There's parquet in the entry way that had to be replaced a few years ago, and linoleum in the kitchen, bathroom and laundry room. The garage is floored with sod and that's where we grow mushrooms. Upstairs is all the original blue carpet, and linoleum in the bathrooms.

Ok, I made up that part about the sod and the mushrooms in the garage. It's actually astroturf and we rent it out to minor league football teams to practice.

Main Course - Do you know anyone whose life has been touched by adoption?

I grew up with a few friends who were adopted. Some couples at our church have adopted kids from overseas - one a while back from Romania, and another adopted three kids from South America. Nobody in my immediate or extended family was adopted, or has adopted kids that I know of. Not counting as part of marrying into a family with kids already, and "adopting" them as your own.


Dessert - Name 2 blue things.

Appetizer - What was your favorite cartoon when you were a child?

Wow, if we're talking strictly cartoons I would have to say "Super Friends". Nothing better on a Saturday morning than watching my favorite superheroes and their super pals battle the forces of evil. And it was always a treat when Flash or Green Lantern would make a guest appearance. Later on, Super Friends morphed into "Challenge of the Super Friends", with even more superheroes fighting the "Legion of Doom". Great stuff.


Soup - Pretend you are about to get a new pet. Which animal would you pick, and what would you name it?

Oh man, no, not another one. After spending the majority of my life with no pets, our family has five. We have four cats: 1) Tas - 15 years old and the crotchety grandpa of our little clan. 2) Skye - 2 year old siamese-ish/ragdoll-ish troublemaker. He's the one that shreds things when I haven't fed him quickly enough. Like Laura's new hardback book. Or my brand new Bible ;(. 3) Fizban - 2 year old massive brown and white...thing. I inherited this behemoth from my uncle last year. Fizz is the enforcer, and also makes a handy paperweight. 4) Kitiara (or Kit) - the 1-1/2 year old sole female, raging with heat and none of the (fixed) boys able to help her out. She's Tink's favorite and sometimes her bedtime companion. Likes to climb on top of, well, everything. We also have our 4 year old dog, Ramona, who is a basset/beagle mix and stay outside most of the day.

If I were to want and get another pet it'd be a rock.


Salad - On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being highest, how much do you enjoy getting all dressed up for a special occasion?

If I have something that I think is decent, then I like to get dressed up. Trouble is I have a hard time believing I look good in anything like that. The last time I really took time to make a good appearance was at my 20-yr High School Reunion.


Main Course - What kind of music do you listen to while you drive?

I'm either listening to Sports Talk Radio, regular talk radio, or I'm listening to a theatre show CD. If I'm not listening to any of those, it's Jimmy Buffett. Invariably ;). I rarely, if ever listen to music actually on the radio. There's an 80's station I like that I'll sometimes flip on if I'm in the mood but that's it.


Dessert - When was the last time you bought a clock? And in which room did you put it?

Can't remember at all. I guess the last clock we bought was attached to our DVD player...

Appetizer - Name a color you find soothing.

Green. Green trees, grass, etc - anything out in nature. We have a lot of spaces of just endless green here in East Tennessee. i love living here near the mountains, and the valley with all our varieties of hollows and forests.


Soup - Using 20 or less words, describe your first driving experience.

Parking lot - Central High School. In our station wagon, just me and dad. No injuries, no damage, no lawsuits!


Salad - What material is your favorite item of clothing made out of?

Um...cotton? I have no idea.


Main Course - Who is a great singer or musician who, if they were to come to your town for a concert, you would spend the night outside waiting for tickets to see?

Probably Jimmy Buffett, if I actually had a chance of getting tickets. Although a couple of artists I've never seen in concert, namely Paul McCartney (A Beatle! I mean, c'mon, there's only two left and the other one's Ringo) and Billy Joel that won't be touring forever and it might be my last and only chance...


Dessert - What is the most frequent letter of the alphabet in your whole name (first, middle, maiden, last, etc.)?

There are 4 "a's" in my first, middle and last names combined. And two "l's", two "r's", and two "w's".

Apparently the folks at Friday Feast are taking the day off today (obviously to repair their email notification system which hasn't notified me a new feast is ready like it should in like, months) so Logtar's taken it upon himself to create one!

Appetizer - Lets start with a trio sampler of word association… I say,

Soup - If you had to pick a body of water that you have visited in your life to build a house next to, which one would it be… describe the scenery.

That's easy - the Caribbean Sea. I'd like a villa on the coast of St. Maartin, a wide stretch of beach between us and the sea, a small port village nearby. Several shady palm trees out front, just far enough apart to hang a hammock. Blue skies, fresh salty breezes, a boat waiting nearby to sail off into the harbor...


Salad - Everyone is being green now-a-days, what is your favorite green initiative?

Trees. Lots of trees and grass. And shrubbery. But seriously, hey, we recycle every other Thursday (when I remember to set out the recycle bin).


Main Course - Mexican is one of my favorite foods, share the name of your favorite Mexican dish with all of us (and where to find it) … even if it is just a Taco Bell chalupa?

I love tacos, that's the basic thing. Love-'em love-'em love-'em! Had three from Taco Bell last night - and I survived! I also really like tostadas, the flat tortillas covered in ground beef and queso. Yum...


Dessert - What was the color of your first bicycle, or the oldest toy that you remember and what fruit do you associate with that color?

I guess the first bike I had was red, and I associate red with cherries, strawberries and apples.

Appetizer - Given the choice, would you prefer to live in the country or in the city?

Depends on how you define "city" and "country". I wouldn't want to live in a big city like New York or Chicago - too many people, too much steel and concrete. I wouldn't want to live out in the country - not enough people, too far from civilization. I like right where I am - right outside a nice, medium-sized town next to the mountains. If there was a beach on the other side instead of, well, Farragut it'd be perfect!


Soup - Who is the cutest kid you know?

Both my kids, of course. What else am I going to say?

Carnival Cruise Lines, or Walt Disney World. I'm not picky.


Dessert - What type(s) of vitamins and/or supplements do you take on a regular basis?

I don't take any vitamins, per se, but I do take medicine for high blood pressure and cholesterol which both work amazingly well. And I take a baby aspirin every day, as probably everyone my age or so should.

Kids playing, theme parks, kids playing at theme parks...

Probably one of the mammoth Stephen King books like "The Stand".

Appetizer - What is your favorite kind of cereal?

I'd say Raisin Bran would be at the top of "sorta healthy" cereals, but my all-time favorite would have to be Lucky Charms. That frosted oat cereal with sweet surprises...why, they're Magically Delicious!


Soup - When was the last time you purchased something for your home, what was it, and in which room did it go?

Wow, we actually haven't bought anything really for the house in a good while. There's a number of things we need to buy...a new deck door, for one.


Salad - What is the funniest commercial you’ve ever seen?

Probably the funniest one I ever saw was the famous "Herding Cats" commercial that aired during a Super Bowl a few years ago. Here's a Youtube link.

Appetizer - How many times per day do you usually laugh?

I can always count on being able to laugh around my kids and my wife. I'd say I laugh 30-40 times a day.


Soup - What do your sunglasses look like?

They're black plastic that keep bending and getting out of alignment. They have a brave history of surviving dunking in an alligator pond and being lost for months in my gym bag.


Salad - You win a free trip to anywhere on your continent, but you have to travel by train. Where do you go?

Well, no passenger trains leave Knoxville so I'd have to travel to another city and pick up an Amtrak. And they go most everywhere, so I guess I'd take it to Washington DC. New York and parts west are too far to travel on a train...


Main Course - Name one thing you consider a great quality about living in your town/city.

A huge quality is living near the mountains. The Appalachians and the Smokeys will never rival the Rockies for grandeur and majesty, but our mountains have a warmth, culture and character all their own. The green...all that green! To get out early in the morning and see the mist curling around the peaks in the distance...it's wonderful.


Dessert - If the sky could be another color, what color do you think would look best?

Orange, baby. Big Orange :)

Appetizer - What is your middle name? Would you change any of your names if you could? If so, what would you like to be called?

My middle name is Wade. I'm actually pretty happy with all my names. I didn't like my last name when I was younger because it starts with a "W" and I was always last in whatever alphabetical ordered thing we were doing (interestingly I'm hearing the same complaints from BrainyBoy. What's old is new again..) but I like it ok now especially since I realize it has such a historic significance in Scottish history. And Barry is cool because it's fairly unique.


Soup - If you were a fashion designer, which fabrics, colors, and styles would you probably use the most?

Oh, come ON! Since I'm, you know, a guy I'm going to arbitrarily change this question...

Soup - If you were a fashion designer video game designer, which fabrics, colors, and styles strategic tactics would you probably use the most?

Ok, much better. I love Civilization III, and I usually try to build my civilizations up slowly. I try to spread my soldiers out among the cities to repel invaders, but rarely expand over others' territories. But, of course when I do, I smash them utterly, enslave their workers and take the women as my concubines.

...what? Why are you looking at me that way?


Salad - What is your least favorite chore, and why?

I can't stand changing the litter box. We have four cats and two boxes. You do the math. But my wife and I split the chore, mainly because we're too horrified to make the kids do it...


Main Course - What is something that really frightens you, and can you trace it back to an event in your life?

I have for ages been terrified of a nuclear weapon, and I can trace part of that directly back to watching "The Day After" when I was in high school. The nuclear detonation sequence of "Terminator II" bothered me, and I didn't like watching the nuke go off on 24 last season.


Dessert - Where are you sitting right now? Name 3 things you can see at this moment.

I'm sitting upstairs on the landing at my home computer. It's 11:18 pm and everyone else is in bed. I can see several empty cups, the new Harry Potter book and the new Walt Disney bio sitting nearby, and a large artificial tree we used to keep downstairs but now lives up here by me. I like it.

Appetizer - When was the last time you received a surprise in the mail, and what was it?

Last week suddenly Netflix has adjusted their shipping schedules, either opening up a new distribution center or something. Anyway, I sent my movie back to them on a Tuesday, got the email receipt notice Wednesday and the next movie on Thursday. A true, 1 business day turnaround from receipt like they promised! Then I sent two movies back Wednesday, got the receipts yesterday and email promise to have the next two ("The Simpsons Movie" and "Meet the Robinsons, btw) today! So I expect a nice surprise when I get home this evening.


Soup - If you could have a summer and/or winter home, where would you want it to be?

Somewhere in the Caribbean, preferably St. Maartan or on St. John. In fact, if I had a home there it wouldn't be summer and/or winter home - it would be an all-year home :)


Salad - Pick one: pineapple, orange, banana, apple, cherry.

Cherry is my favorite flavor, so that one's easy. But I love fruits in general so all of those sound very good


Main Course - Describe the nicest piece of clothing that you own.

I have a really nice tan flannel-ish buttondown shirt that I wear a lot as a knock-around shirt. It's really warm, really comfortable, and great to wear just wherever. I love it :)


Dessert - If you could forget one whole day from your life, which day would you choose to wipe from your memory?

September 11, 2001 springs to mind.

But from a personal side, I can't think of any days I'd like to forget. In fact there are a number of days I'd like to remember more vividly...

Appetizer - Make up a word and give us its definition.

A while back an online friend of mine was pregnant, and I used the term "preggerventures" to describe the trials and tribulations she was going through. She thought that was pretty funny and suggested I sent it in to Urban Dictionary. I did, but never heard anything.


Soup - What is currently your favorite song?

For a long time, my favorite song was "The Long and Winding Road" by the Beatles. I've long since passed my Beatles fascination phase but not many songs have come along to replace it. Probably the only one that comes close is "When You Wish Upon a Star" from Pinocchio.


Salad - What’s at the top of your Christmas wish list this year?

Well, I already posted about this but my wife seems to think it's not very feasible and even less likely I'm getting it for Christmas. Fine, when I do get one, I'm going back in time to when she was a kid and picking on her mercilessly. Then she'll think twice about messing with a guy that can time travel in a Ford Focus.

But seriously, at the very top of my real Christmas list is respect, something I've sorely lacked this past year.


Main Course - Name a scent that reminds you of someone special in your life.

Speaking of my wife, when we were first dating she wore a perfume called "Colours" (sp?) that, well, let's just say it was a very unique and memorable scent :)


Dessert - Who is someone on television that you feel probably shouldn’t be, and why?

I find it difficult to see Martha Stewart back on the air as if nothing had happened, as if her "fans" just ignore the real behind-the-scenes person she seems to be. Not that anyone doesn't deserve a second chance, but it's just odd that she seems to have slipped right back into her "domestic diva" role after being in jail pretty easily.

I also get tired of Donald Trump sticking his ugly toupee'd face into things at NBC. The first couple seasons of "The Apprentice" were decent, but he's just become a parody of himself.

Now, if you asked who is someone who shouldn't be on the radio, I could give you Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Mark Levine, Michael Savage, Neal Boortz and a host of other past and present radio show hosts that should never have graced the airwaves with their one-sided, reactionary, egotistical farcical shows. (Remember when G. Gordon Liddy and Oliver North even had shows? Good grief. Are they still on the air? I hope not...)

Appetizer - What was the last game you purchased?
The last board game was probably the expansion set for our cool came called "Carcassone". The last video game was Star Wars Lego II, just after I subscribed to World of Warcraft. They're great time-wasters :)


Soup - Name something in which you don’t believe.
That's an interesting question. I don't believe in the Designated Hitter rule. I don't believe in the NFL's Sudden Death overtime. I don't believe nobody doesn't have some good in them somewhere.


Salad - If you could choose a celebrity to be your boss, who would you pick?
George Lucas or Disney President Bob Iger - as long as I worked directly for or with them, and they weren't, like, my boss's boss's boss's boss's boss's boss.


Main Course - What was a lesson you had to learn the hard way?
You have to have a lot of patience to even think about getting what you want or feel you deserve... And even then sometimes it never comes, and you have to learn to deal with that, too.


Dessert - Describe your idea of the perfect relaxation room.

My living room on a warm, spring day. The sun is shining in the windows, there's a gentle breeze coming in the window. The ceiling fan is turning. I'm laying on the couch reading a good book or just drowsing, there's some good music on and I have a big glass of iced tea and a full bag of chips. Aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh...

Appetizer - What is your favorite carnival/amusement park ride?

If I had to pick one, it'd probably be the Pirates of the Caribbean at Walt Disney World. Honorable mention would go to the Haunted Mansion at WDW, Twister at Universal Studios, and the old Okefenokee Swamp at Six Flags over Georgia


Soup - How do you react in uncomfortable social situations?

I pull off the side and don't interact with anyone. I wander, waiting for someone a little more extroverted to strike up a conversation with me.


Salad - On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being highest, how much do you enjoy discussing deep, philosophical topics?

I'd say about a 7, although my technical and academic knowledge of actual philosophy is very limited. I do have my own beliefs and I think I can converse with someone fairly coherantly.


Main Course - Did you get a flu shot this year? If not, do you plan to?

Of course. I got mine a couple weeks ago, and it's provided by my work. One of the perks for working for a health system. Why wouldn't someone get a flu shot? Can't be that expensive...


Dessert - Approximately how many hours per week do you spend watching television?

Not counting time just occupying the same room a TV happens to be on, probably about 10 hours actually sitting down and watching a program on TV.

Appetizer - What was your first “real” job?

My first "real" job was as an usher at Halls Cinema 4 in Halls, Tennessee (north of Knoxville) the first summer of college. It will always be one of my favorite jobs I ever had, because - hey, free movies and, hey, free popcorn. But seriously, I learned to stay on a schedule, be responsible for my finances, manage my time, learn customer service, and I also made friends through that job that have lasted to this day. After a couple of years, I parleyed that job into an Assistant Manager at Sevier Cinema 3 in Sevierville, which at the time was owned by the same company.

Although technically my first job was working at the UT Music Hall as a stagehand/tech it was Work Study job arranged with the financial aid department and not one I actually applied for. I did end up working off and on there as well the whole time I was at UT.


Soup - Where would you go if you wanted to spark your creativity?

The theatre. I'm at my most creative when I'm in a theatre, surrounded my musicians or actors and in the midst of rehearsal.


Salad - Complete this sentence: I am embarrassed when…

I am embarrassed when… I once again forget something I was supposed to remember. I have the worst memory in the world, and it's not something I've been able to make any progress beating. I think I'm just brain-damaged.


Main Course - What values did your parents instill in you?

You name it. All of them. Fairness, kindness, listening to other people, empathy, patience...


Dessert - Name 3 fads from your teenage years.

I was a teenager in the 80's, so all my formative fads are from there. I remember:

1. Rubik's Cube - not just it, but a dozen other hand-held put-them-back-together puzzles. I know I had a couple others besides The Cube. People might remember all the various self-help books that came out about that time on how to beat the Rubik's Cube, plus a number of books on how to beat all the video games that were just getting popular - Defender, Qbert, all of those..
   
2. Winged Hair - not the Farrah Fawcett "feathered" look, specifically, but the parted down the middle, swept back to the sides hairstyle that a lot of teenage girls (and some guys whose hair was long enough) favored. Let's just say I REALLY liked that look on some of the girls in my school... :)
   
3. Hand-held electronic games - The precursors to GameBoys were Electronic Football and Electronic Basketball. Small boxes about the same size as a GameBoy but using LED lights you manipulated around a screen to simulate a sporting event. They were specialized - they could only play the one specific game they were designed for - and they were everywhere. I remember sitting in high school study hall and hearing, "beep boop! beep beep beep boop!" all over. The teachers eventually confiscated most of them, but we learned to disable the sound and keep them out of sight.
   
   You know, I could go on and on with 80's fads...

Appetizer - Which snack do you like to get when you go to the movies?

I'm not sure what year the actual "internet" came into being, but I was on the precursor to IRC (Internet Relay Chat) when it was just called "Relay" back in college, so that would have been the mid 80's. I subscribed to Compuserve eventually, then was pretty heavy into the old dial-up BBS's back in the day. Those eventually evolved into the internet we know and love today.

1) I very rarely eat sweets. The rest of my family covers that very well.

2) I avoid driving off cliffs, dropping anvils on my toe, drinking sulphuric acid, swimming with Brazilian piranhas, screaming "I'M NOT A TERRORIST!!!!" in the middle of a crowded airport, letting hard grounders one-hop me in the chin, hiding from T-Rex's in an outdoor toilet, getting stuck in the 50's in my Delorean without sufficient plutonium or a working flux capacitor, or watching UT play Florida in the Swamp. Other than that I'm pretty reckless.
